Camping Info
The success of the 18th Phoenix Bouldering Contest (as well as future events) hinges on a successful working relationship with the Tonto National Forest. To facilitate our permit, the PBC and the Tonto National Forest discuss and formulate a management plan to reduce the environmental impact not only in Oak Flats Campground but also the surrounding forest. In order for this plan to work, we will need the help and cooperation of all who attend. Please observe the following camping guidelines:
- NO ONE WILL BE ALLOWED TO CAMP INSIDE OF OAK FLATS CAMPGROUND WITHOUT OFFICIAL PERMISSION FROM THE PBC. You will be asked to relocate outside of the campground should you arrive early and set up camp inside of Oak Flats Campground.
- ALL people will be directed to areas where you may camp. Be prepared to camp away from your vehicle. Friends who wish to camp together should arrive together.
- SHARE CAMPING AREAS AS CAMPING WILL BE TIGHT!!!
- CARPOOL!!!! All cars must NOT park on any roadway at any times. At the same time, cars may only pull off road where obvious "pull-outs" exist. Do NOT run over any vegetation of any kind at any time!!!
- GLASS CONTAINERS WILL BE PROHIBITED!!! Please understand that broken glass has become a problem at Oak Flats.
- CAMPFIRES WILL NOT BE PERMITTED!!!
- Low clearance vehicles are NOT recommended. Easy access camping areas exist, but these areas will go fast.
- GREAT CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN WITH CIGARETTES. The area is dry; possibilities of fire could be high. Please do not throw cigarette butts on the ground.
- Pets will need to be on leashes at all times.
- BRING LOTS OF WATER! WATER WILL NOT BE AVAILBLE!!!
- Expect rocky and gravelly sleeping surfaces.
- EXPECT TEMPERATURES BELOW FREEZING AND ABOVE 100 DEGREES FARENHEIT!!! Just in case, bring rain gear (let's keep our fingers crossed on this one).
- USE ONLY DESIGNATED TOILETS NO MATTER HOW LAZY YOU MAY FEEL!!!
- CLEAN UP ALL TRASH THAT IS YOURS (OR NOT YOURS) AND HAUL AWAY!!! Garbage has always been a problem at the PBC so please haul as much away as possible.
- LOCK AND SECURE YOUR VEHICLE AT ALL TIMES!!! Climbing equipment and assorted other things have been stolen out of vehicles over the years.
- WHEN ON FOOT, PLEASE ATTEMPT TO STAY ON TRAILS AND ROADWAYS!!!
- MOUNTAIN BIKES MUST STAY ON EXISTING ROADWAYS AT ALL TIMES!!!
- WHEN DRIVING A CAR, PLEASE DRIVE SLOWLY AND CAUTIOUSLY!!!
- WARNING - THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF SAFETY MAY SET UP A SOBRIETY "CHECK-POINT" JUST OUTSIDE OF OAK FLATS CAMPGROUND. IF YOU PLAN ON DRINKING, YOU SHOULD PLAN ON CAMPING OR HAVING A DESIGNATED DRIVER.
Please help us to make the PBC a fun and safe experience for all.
